Emotional Intelligence is becoming an important dimension due to its possible influence over the mediation process. It is becoming more integrated in mediation programs in different countries. Current field work is trying to expand the knowledge of the role that emotions play in the mediation process and in mediators. It also describes some of the key emotional elements or competencies that mediators should adopt to conclude the mediation process with satisfactory results for all parties. It presents a proposal for intervention and the practice of mediation in a family environment, integrating Emotional Intelligence and its dimensions as the backbone of the intervention. Understanding emotional factors creates the opportunity to restore, preserve, or improve relationships.
