Abstract

This article aims to understand the importance of social support in positive social reintegration, as well as in overcoming and abandoning criminal behavior of people serving sentences in Spanish prisons.
The authors analyze social support, its significant components (structure, function, perceived/received support and conditions) and its importance as a protective or evolutionary factor for adaptation, integration, and well-being both in times of stress (Buffer Model) and in normal situations (Main Effects Model). The influence of the environment and the role of Prison Social Work in the development and execution of specific actions aimed at positively involving the context, optimizing prison treatment and achieving adequate social reintegration with greater success are then studied.
