Assessment of Macronutrient and Micronutrient Intake Adequacy in Amateur Endurance Runners

The aim of this study was to evaluate the adequacy of nutrient intake in amateur runners. Twenty male runners were assessed using non-consecutive 3-day food records. The results showed that only 5% of participants had adequate intakes of carbohydrates and lipids, and none met the recommended intake for protein. Additionally, only 5% had adequate intakes of vitamin A, B2, niacin, and vitamin B6, while none had adequate levels of vitamins B1, B12, or folic acid. Iron intake was adequate in 45% of participants, calcium in 5%, and no runner met the recommended intake for magnesium. These findings suggest that amateur runners may be a group vulnerable to malnutrition due to insufficient nutrient intake.
