In his 1998 book Los detectives salvajes, Roberto Bolaño not only recounts travels and adventures in the Americas and Europe, but also explores African spaces, with a particular emphasis on Angola and Liberia. To understand this mode of narration and the manner in which the characters move through diverse cultural contexts, an approach based on a complex epistemology, which emphasises a transcultural and circular perspective, is proposed. This approach emphasises that, in Los detectives salvajes, Africa is portrayed as the crucible of travel and adventure, where concepts such as hunger, health, safety, language and the wandering spirit find expression. It is posited that the representation of Africa in Bolaño’s oeuvre is a manifestation of the inherent negativity in human existence.
