Abstract

The article addresses the basically commercial artistic production carried out by René Magritte in relation to Cinema, paying special attention to the film posters designed in two stages: firstly purely as advertising, signed either anonymously or pseudonymously, with scant distribution and in some cases, complex attribution. Later, after the Second World War, the posters were used as invitations for special cinematographic events. In addition to the analysis of the works focusing on some posters from a historical and aesthetic contextual approach, the article concentrates specifically on the case study of their designs and the final poster for the projection of the American western The Ox-Bow Incident (William A. Wellman, 1943), linking the metaphorical anti-fascist discourse in the film with the representation executed by Magritte, and inspired by the aesthetics of the film.
