Abstract

The aim of this paper is to familiarize the reader with the Saragossa Pórtico group in arder to emphasize their influence on the development of abstract art in Spain. The Pórtico group was formed by Santiago Lagunas Mayandfa, Fermfn Aguayo Benediste and Eloy Giménez Laguardia. During the period from 1947 to 1952, these three artists developed a type of plastic art which was deeply influenced by the European avant-guard movement as well as by artists such as Picasso, Gris, Archipenko, Braque Miró and Klee, among others. These influences would lead them to expressing themselves in very personal ways of non figurative art and would make them the pioneers of this movement in Spain. The disdain of Madrid’s critics pushed the Pórtico group into oblivion, as their attention was focussed on other groups who would only reveal themselves as abstract artists later on.
