Modern Galicia: Illustrated Reviews (1916-1936)

Abstract

In Coruña, modern city, the first issue of Vida was published in 1920, and two years later Gráfica and Luz, directed by Juan Marín Felipe. Julio J. Casal, the future director of Alfar, began his career in Luz, which would also publish the first texts by Angel Ferrant. Luis Huici, Francisco Miguel, Manuel Mendez and Nunez Carnicer turned to cuba-futurism and ultraism. As Ronsel was founded in Lugo, directed by Evaristo Correa Calderon, three of its illustrators -Alvaro Cebreiro (art director), the uruguayan Barradas and Norah Borges- also worked on Alfar. Other artists involved in this publication were Angel Johan, Alberto, Benjamin Palencia and the architect Luis Lacasa. Over the 1920s and 1930s a number of other reviews were also published in Galicia, the most important of which were Nós (1920-1935), Alborada, Resol, Cristal, Yunque and Universitarios.
