Photography is a key element in the training of future professionals in visual communication and advertising, not only as a technical tool, but also as a symbolic medium that contributes to the construction of messages and the mediation of consumption, playing a central role in the art direction of advertising, informational and audiovisual pieces. This study analyses how photography is taught for art direction purposes in university degrees in Spain, through a review of curricula, a questionnaire and a panel of experts. The results show that, although there are compulsory subjects related to photography and art direction, their weight in credits is limited, which shows an insufficient presence compared to other content. Both teachers and graduates agree that the training does not always develop the necessary technical and creative skills in a solid manner, especially in visual conceptualisation, art direction and the construction of photographic narratives for brands or products.
