The aim of this paper was to analyze the effect of individual factors, including the manager’s age, educational level, seniority in the position, and the organizational factor of being a family member or not, with respect to the digital competencies of MSME managers. For this purpose, based on a non-probabilistic sample of 153 entrepreneurs in the commerce and services sector in Xalapa, Mexico, an ordinal logistic regression model was applied. The statistical results showed that younger managers tend to develop more advanced digital competences, while older managers are concentrated at intermediate levels or have gaps in certain areas. Likewise, experience in the position influences digital proficiency, as managers with a moderate track record tend to reach the highest levels with those with long tenure may experience some stagnation. In terms of educational level, postgraduate studies favor the development of digital competencies, although in family firms experience and organizational learning also a key role. These findings contribute to the theoretical body of dynamic capabilities and offer strategic recommendations to improve the digitization and competitiveness of family firms.
