Abstract

Background: alterations in metabolic and physiological processes of physical inactivity and unhealthy lifestyles have increased morbidity in older adults. We examined the effect of an aerobic predominance physical activity program on the components (cardiorespiratory, metabolic, morphological, muscle and motor) of healthy physical condition of the elderly without or with presence of chronic non-communicable disease. Methodology: quasi-experimental study in 45 participants of both genders from 60 years of age and up, assigned to an experimental (n = 23) and a control group (n = 22). Body composition, functional capacity, biological markers, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure measures were determined before and after the program. Results analyzed with Statistica 8.0 software. Results: Benefits were obtained in the cardiorespiratory component in the systolic blood pressure factors (p< .001), diastolic pressure (p<.027) and cardiorespiratory strength (p< .001). The metabolic component showed improvements in the factors of total cholesterol (p <. 035) and triglycerides (P <. 024). In the morphological component, the lower train flexibility factor (p <. 039) was optimized, in the muscular component, the upper and lower train force factors (p <. 001) were improved, and the agility and dynamic equilibrium factor (p <. 001) of the motor component was improved. Conclusion: Physical activity acts on the components of healthy physical condition to enhance the physical health improvements of older adults.
