Habits and its sociocultural expressions according to Hegel

The notion of habit of Hegel is a matter that requires to be clarified. On one side, we see how he evaluates the Subjective Spirit. Based on this, he reviews and critiques the psychology of his time. According to the Encyclopedia some habits emerge in a preconscious way, when the consciousness has not been consolidated yet. So, the habit is a fundamental part of Hegel’s philosophy to get to the consciousness, achieve freedom and explaining the human psyche, like the arising from self-consciousness. In the other hand, in the Subjective Spirit, habits and customs are shared by societies. This ethical substance is the main feature of a culture that expresses itself in its institutions, laws, rights, customs, habits, etc. The State is the guardian of this essence and it has to safeguard its expressions. Customs and habits are two of these.
