This article is an approach to the relationship between the economic base and the juridical-political and ideological superstructure in the works of Louis Althusser and Étienne Balibar during the 1960s and 1970s. In order to do so, we will first explain the political and intellectual context in which Althusser and Balibar developed their works. Subsequently, the critique of a general theory of the modes of production will be studied. This discussion leads Althusser to the recomposition of the relation between the base and the superstructure after May 1968. Finally, we will present the specificity that this relation takes on in Balibar’s work.
