The mosaic and the Law. A Derridean rereading of Julia Kristeva’s chora

In this paper I propose a critique of Julia Kristeva’s notion of chora. To do so, I make use of her own notion of “intertextuality”, which I situate in the context of her intellectual encounter with Jacques Derrida and, specifically, with his notions of “différance” and “deconstruction”. Accepting that Kristeva's theory of chora reproduces a binary version of sexual difference by positing the symbolic and the semiotic as distinct spaces, I defend the thesis that “intertextuality” enables a conception of the symbolic that challenges the binary opposition posed by Kristeva.
