The The Middle-Platonic determination of Hermeneutics in Philo of Alexandria

This paper suggests to reevaluate the determination that Middle-Platonism exerted on Philo of Alexandria’s hermeneutical method, considering that the appropriation by the author of the philosophical epistemes contemporaries to him, was primary in leading him to his critical, rationalist and renovating analysis of the sacred text, rising above literalist readings, and to his precocious “demythologization” of the Bible. Aspects which set an early and non-fundamentalist precedent to the critical interpretation of the Judeo-Christian Scriptures.
