Abstract

The usefulness of the genetically modified organisms (GM) as a tool in research to generate knowledge is undeniable. However, GM crops are very controversial. Currently, public opinion has been polarized into groups that fervently defend its use and groups with an equally opposite opinion. This manuscript reviews briefly the status of GM crops and the current legislation; what defines a crop to be considered as GM and the process for its commercialization within the European Union. The existing controversy around GM crops and whether the legislation should be revised or updated in any of its aspects is also exposed.
