Abstract

Sediments can be conceptually divided into two layers. The uppermost layer, with an approximate depth of 15-20 cm, is where active processes occur—both aerobic and anaerobic—leading to the degradation of organic matter. Additionally, this layer regulates the exchange processes between sediment and water. It is in this zone that the most pronounced nutrient gradients are observed
