Previous research has identified that experiences of stigma, discrimination, and social and familial rejection are critical factors contributing to the high prevalence of depressive symptoms in LGBT+ individuals. However, evidence of this is limited in Mexico. Therefore, a descriptive-comparative quantitative study was conducted to analyze the levels of depressive symptoms between cisgender-heterosexual and LGBT+ individuals in Mexico. Data from 265 adult participants were collected using the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) through non-probabilistic sampling. The results indicated statistically significant differences in depression levels between both samples, with a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms in the LGBT+ group. Specifically, it was observed that 48.6% of the LGBT+ sample had moderate to severe levels of depression, compared to 22.5% in the cisgender-heterosexual group. These findings align with previous international studies suggesting a greater vulnerability to depression among LGBT+ individuals.
