Abstract

The following research proposes a starting point for studying the iconography contained on the sheets of Chilean poetry printed from the late 19th century until the early 20th century, known by the name of Lira Popular. It begins with a presentation of the background from where this hybrid phenomenon was born, combining literature, art and folklore, and studying its precedents from the hispanic string literature and the characteristics it adopted in the american continent, especially in Chile. Through an analysis of a brief selection of four of these sheets, we studied the presence of the snake figure under diverse symbolic approaches and visual features, establishing possible influences that both, poets and artists, use to give shape to their work pieces.
