Audio Description in the Translation Classroom: Multilingualism as a Didactic Tool

Abstract

This article shows the results obtained in a multilingual and multimodal project on audio description. Applied in two consecutive translation subjects at the University of Lleida (2023-2024), direct and reverse translation in Catalan, Spanish and English are practised through two didactic units in two disciplines (theatre and cinema/TV). Audio description is introduced in a creative and dynamic practice by positioning students as audio descriptor agents. Aside from sensitizing them to media accessibility, this project focuses on our students’ perceptions regarding their oral and written expression and comprehension competences. Results indicate notable improvements in all linguistic and translation skills, as well as positive assessments in bidirectional and multilingual work, which demonstrates that multilingualism is a didactic and language learning tool.

  • Mariona Sabaté Carrové, Universidad de Lleida

    Mariona Sabaté-Carrové is a doctor in English Philology and University Professor, DELILE Department of the University of Lleida. Teacher in the Degree in English Studies, Double Degree in Languages ​​and Translation (LLETRA) and Online Master in Applied Languages ​​and Online Master in Language and Digital Communication at the UdL. Member of the TRADIT group, she has participated in the TRADILEX project, and currently in the TRADILAB2 and CREATELAB PIE. Member of the European Erasmus+ AVTIA project and external member of the P-TIAL group of the UNC (SECyT Project, Argentina) on translation and accessibility. Various publications on audiovisual translation and language teaching.

  • Mariazell Eugènia Bosch Fábregas, University of Lleida

    Mariazell Eugènia Bosch Fábregas is an associate lecturer at the University of Lleida, where she teaches translation and English. She holds a degree in English Studies (UB) and a master's in Translation Studies (UPF). Currently, she is completing her PhD in Translation, Gender, and Cultural Studies (UVIC-UCC). Her research interests include gender studies, audiovisual translation, and literary translation. She is a member of TRACTE research group and participates in the European Erasmus+ project AVTIA. Her recent publications feature a chapter on literary translation (2024) and an article on audiovisual translation and multilingualism (2023).
