The infamy of actresses in the Roman world

According to Roman society, certain professions carried infamy. Among these infamous professions were actors and other performing arts. Although this negative perception of the scaenici persisted throughout Roman history, certain specific activities either lost or gained this infamous character over time. Jurisprudential texts allow for the study of the evolution of the requirements that had to be met for a performance to produce infamous effects. To this end, special attention will be given to the main legal source on the matter (Ulpian, 6 ad Ed., D. 3.2.2.5).
