What does the Northern Bald Ibis play at in its migrations?

Abstract

Cooperation between animals often poses a puzzle as it contradicts the basic notion that selection favors those selfish genes that seek only their own benefit for the carrier. The migration of birds in a V formation is one of these cooperation dilemmas, as the individual flying at the vertex of the V assumes the greatest effort (cooperator) while those in the wake (selfish) benefit from the Venturi effect originated by the one in front.
