Abstract

In some television series, movie or book we have seen the case of a character who, after being shot in the left
side of the chest, was miraculously saved... because his heart was on the opposite side! The thing could be nothing
more than a curiosity: 1 in every 8,000 humans is born that way. But why are the other 7,999 of us born with the
heart and stomach on the left side of our body and the liver on the right? This is a question that has fascinated
biologists for decades, but only in the last few years.Twenty years ago we have begun to understand how
the molecular signals that place these organs in the position in which we usually have them work.
