Abstract

Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid that is synthesized from cholesterol, its general precursor, through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). The synthesis reactions take place in the constitutive zones of the adrenal gland: reticular zone (ZR), glomerular zone (ZG), and fasciculate zone (ZF). This mineralocorticoid mainly acts in tissues where the mineralocorticoid receptor is expressed, such as liver, brain, pituitary, monocytes, renal epithelium, salivary glands, and colon. Its activity in the renal epithelium is based on the retention of sodium (Na+) and the excretion of potassium (K+)
