Abstract

Concern for Nature and the valuation of other living beings, as co-participants in it along with man, are firmly anchored in many cultures. Already in the Old Testament it is said that after each act of creation “God saw that this was good” and the story of Noah’s Ark links the salvation of man with the salvation of animals. Thus, although some authors, such as White (1967), Crosby (1986) or Tellería (1999), have seen in the anthropocentric approaches of the Semitic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) the bases of the neglect and arrogance with which our society has treated other forms of life (the reference from Genesis is often cited “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth; subdue it and rule over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky…”), the Islamist Mawil Izzi Dien, quoting the Koran, affirms that “Allah created the human race for a great reason, that it can act as viceroy on Earth… His dominion on Earth is intended for him to improve and develop it and not for improper or evil uses” (Lamprecht, 1997
