Abstract

Perhaps it sounds familiar to us that mast cells are involved in the allergies that many of us suffer from and that are so annoying, as these cells produce and release a large amount of histamine. However, mast cells are much more than that and seem to be involved in many more processes and to be more important than initially believed: defense against bacteria and parasites, various inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, asthma, inflammatory bowel diseases, etc., as well as other diseases, including hypercholesterolemia and neoplastic diseases.
