Abstract

The ovary is a gland with gametogenic and endocrine functions, which are regulated through the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis. The peptidergic hypothalamic neurons of the arcuate nucleus are responsible for the synthesis and pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which regulates the synthesis and release of gonadotropins (follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH] and luteinizing hormone [LH]), which travel through the systemic circulation to bind to their specific receptors in the female gonads. In the ovary, FSH induces follicular maturation as well as the biosynthesis of estrogens and progesterone, while LH stimulates the secretion of androgens and the luteinization of post-ovulatory follicles [Parrot & Skinner, Encyclopedia of Reproduction III: 483-490 (1999)].
