Abstract

Mitochondria are fundamental organelles to cellular life: they produce more than 90% of cellular energy in the form of ATP. Paradoxically, the mitochondrion is also involved in the phenomenon of programmed cell death or “apoptosis”. Current predictions estimate that of the approximately 1500 proteins that make it up, only 40% have been clearly identified in humans and mice.
