The aim of this study is to present a synthesis of the work and translation theory of Anton Popovič, a prominent Slovak linguist and theorist who belonged to the Nitra School, and to provide the author with greater exposure in Spain and in the Spanish-speaking world. Popovič's research has been of fundamental importance in the development of translatological ideas in Czechoslovakia and other Central European countries since he was one of the first to apply semiotic theory to the study of translation and to consider translation as a particular case of metacommunication. In turn, this study highlights the links and similarities of Popovič's theory with the work of Eugene A. Nida, since, in the Central European context, Anton Popovič's contributions marked a shift in translation theories towards the communicative and intercultural approach.
