Translation, Identity, Resistance: Luis Cernuda, William Wordsworth’s Translator

Luis Cernuda’s first translations with English as a source language are his versions of two sonnets written by William Wordsworth in 1810, at the time of the Napoleonic invasion of Spain. These translations were published in Barcelona in 1938; by then, Cernuda had been living in England for two months. Wordsworth’s sonnets deal with the loss of liberty and its effect on the individual who suffers it. Both the choice of the foreign poems and Cernuda’s translation strategies identify him with the social group fighting for the Spanish Republic and with the
resistance against Francisco Franco.
