Abstract

Erwin Walter Palm (VIII/28/ 1910-VII/7 /1988) philologist and archaeologist and his future wife Hilde Löwenstein (later she will be known as the poetess Hilde Domin) foresaw the Holocaust and left Heidelberg in 1932 in order to continue their studies, to graduate and do research in Florence and Rome. In 1939 they had to go to Great Britain and in 1940 they carne to the Dominican Republic, where they stayed for 12 years. In Santo Domingo Palm discovered the Colonial Art. His knowledge of the ancient, medieval and modern European world -an orientation in the unaccustomed- uncovered the European reception hidden in the Colonial. Due to Hitler, Palm became a pioneer of the studies and conservation of Colonial momunents. His publications continue to be the starting point for research and restauration work.
