Abstract

The dogma of effort is an educational ideology characteristic of our time, an age in which time is money and productivity must prevail at all costs. It reveals significant scientific shortcomings and, above all, ethical ones. It carries meritocratic connotations and produces segregation. Effort implies striving, suffering, tenacity, drive, sweat. Self-giving entails the same commitment, but with enthusiasm and without suffering—because it is animated by willingness, desire, and heart.
