"An intellectual metaphor adopted by an age is often a passionate attempt to forge at least the appearance of solution to an almost insoluble problem". This conclusion of Frank Manuel in his recent book Utopian Thought in the Western World (Oxford 1979) preceded his discussion of the importance of the conception of the two books in the 17th century.
