Abstract

The mask or mascarón, is a usual resource in Western architecture from the Ancient World, resurrecting specially at the Renaissance, under the culture of Humanism, where it becomes a touchstone to confront the value of nature with the artificiality of architecture. Main subject of the theory and practice of architecture in Italy, within Spain, Andalusia will be a privileged region in it use, thanks to the close contact with the Italian peninsula through the early importation of works of art, the presence of Italian and Spanish artists that visited the neighbour country, as well as the circulation of prints since the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth Century.
